E. 13:53-58 TRUTH REJECTED: DANGER OF CARELESS FAMILIARITY

a. 13:53 And it came to pass, when :Jesus had finished these parables, he departed from there.

kai ouk ePOIe-sen eKEI duNAmeis [1411]polLAS diA ten a-piSTIan [570] auTON.

NOTE: 13:44 - Would we sell all we had to buy a field in which we had found and hid a priceless treasure? I am sure we would. And what about the merchant who found a pearl of great price? Would we too sell all we had to buy it?

Look at it another way. Jesus saw in the lost human race through Adam - a potentially great treasure. He gave His very life to purchase you and me. And so He sees us as a pearl of great price! Are we worth purchasing for our potential to the Son of God? Some have taken these two parables, and answer, Yes.

I really think, though, that Jesus had in mind the first interpretation.

Jesus' disciples understood the Kingdom message in the above parables (13:51). Jesus then in 13:52 shows how we as scribes disciple in the Kingdom of the heavens; we should be like a householder. In our treasure we have things new and old. We, like Jesus, bring forth out of this treasure - Kingdom truth in parable form (oldand familiar illustrations) to illustrate our newKingdom understanding!

And yet, we must not misunderstand the possibility of misunderstanding and rejection, as illustrated in 13:53-58. If Jesus, our Lord and teacher should be rejected because of stumbling on the part of hearers - should not weas His followers - be prepared to be similarly treated as we follow Him in His teaching?
